• Discovery – the process of data mining, collection, and analysis with the goal of initiating a flood risk or mitigation project and risk discussions within a watershed
• FEMA – Federal Emergency Management Agency
• FIRM – Flood Insurance Rate Map
• Flood Hazard – a naturally occurring or man-made flooding condition what could cause harm
• Flood Risk – the likelihood or chance that someone or something is harmed when a flood hazard event occurs

• Hazard Mitigation – “…any action taken to reduce or eliminate long term risk to people and property from natural hazards.” (FEMA)
• HAZUS – HAZards United States. A risk assessment methodology that uses GIS technology for estimating potential losses (physical, economic, and social impacts) from natural disasters (earthquake, flood, and hurricane).
